9iR2 on RH 7.2 - runInstaller segmentation fault

Hi,

I am trying to install an Oracle 9i Release 2 database on a PIII PC
with 512MB RAM running vanilla Redhat 7.2 professional. However I
cannot even get the runInstaller to start as it quits with a
segmentation fault.

(I have already installed 9i R1 with no problems on the same machine)

I suspect I may have an incompatibility with the glibc libraries that
come with RH7.2.

Can anyone confirm this, and hopefully point me in the direction of a
fix or workaround. (Full details of my server config at the end....)

Your input will be much appreciated.

Regards

John

Here comes the stuff!!

Cheers Bards,

I think I will have to cough up for RH7.3 as opposed to b*****ing
around with patching libraries in RH7.

Hi Ender,

yes you're right it comes with a 1.3.1 jre in

../../stage/Components/oracle.swd.jre/1.3.1.0.0/DataFiles/Expanded/jre/linux

on Disk1 of the installation cd.

I have also tried doing a 'java -version' on the exe in this dir and
still get a segmentation fault.

The Java 1.3.0 mentioned above is my current JDK on the operating
system (I don't know why I mentioned it....it was getting late!).

Cheers,

John

I was able to install 9iR2 on RHL 7.2 with no problems. Have you
applied all the updates? Just in case you don't know, Oracle supports
9i on RHL 7.1, but not 7.2 and 7.3.

9iR2 on RH 7.2 - runInstaller segmentation fault
Segmentation Fault is usually caused by the orphaning of shared memory segments
and semaphores when OFSA applications exit abnormally.  This causes any
semaphores and shared memory segments already allocated by the process
to be orphaned, which in turn compounds the problem as other processes exit
and new ones try to start. You can clear the{*filter*} semaphores by restarting
the server.

Hi Tony,

Could you specify which updates?

My RH72 installation is straight out of the box, apart from some
changes to the kernel parameters as specified by the 9iR2 installation
notes.

Cheers

John

Hi Vimal,

Thanks for the info.

Rebooting doesn't seem to have any effect. In fact the first thing I
do after startup is to run the installer (after starting an X11
session of course).

The annoying thing is that untypically 9iR2 installed into Windows NT
like a dream...(but I don't run my production stuff on NT!)

If I have to upgrade to RH73 then so be it, but it should not be
impossible to get it to work on RH72 (????)

Best regards,

John

John,

I had all the available updates applied before installing Oracle. This
may not be the cause of the segmentation fault, just one possibility.
