What is staging area of Oracle8 for Linux?

Hi, I am trying setup Oracle8 for Linux by using the downloaded
805ship.tgz.

After gunzip and tar xvf, many dircectory created under
/usr/local/oracle.
After something pre-config to those .profile etc., run orainst,
everything seems fine but I don't know what is the Source Staging Area.
I set both ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_BASE to /usr/local/oracle. But the
Source Staging Area doesn't allow me to use the same pathname. I read
the documents under unixdoc but still don't know what I should input to
it. My guess is it maybe for storing the gunzip directory on somewhere
like /home/oracle/download/oracle/... to act as installing from CD-ROM
and run the orainst from it to install to /usr/local/oracle. So that we
need to specify /home/oracle/download/oracle to Source Staging Area.
Because the documents stated that we could install more than one times
from there.

Any information to clear my concept would be much appreciated.
Thanks,

You should set ORACLE_BASE to the root directory where you are going to
install Oracle, (something like /data1/d01/app/oracle) and ORACLE_HOME to
the specific product release directory which is contained within ORACLE_BASE
(assuming you have already defined ORACLE_BASE this would be
$ORACLE_BASE/product/8.0.5).
