 Data Modeling
Does anyone know of a data modeling tool that runs on SUNs either
in Motif or OpenLook for SYBASE which allows you to maintain the model
cleanly in the future and doesn't force you to use their APIs.
I have heard of Software through Pictures but I don't know the details.

STP - Software through Pictures from IDE

comes with an Entity Relationship Diagram
tool but I guess you have to purchase the whole tool kit
dataflow diagrams, documentation tools, project database,
data dictionary etc. -
which is quite good but not inexpensive.
The version I have used about a year ago allows you to
draw er diagrams and generates working create table statements.
The generation of SQL was a little bit cumbersome but
they were working on it so hopefully this is easier now.
If you want to cover more than just database design, means
process design, documentation  etc. with  an integrated tool this is
a good solution. We run it on a SUN under Open Windows.

If you want something inexpensive, easy to use and
designed just for data modeling check:

ERDRAW together with the other tools is an EER diagram editor and translates
into Sybase SQL (among other SQL dialects). But it
also provides you with SQL code for defining index,
sp_primarykey, sp_foreignkey and for controlling
referential integrity! ( Maybe I missed something ).
It is a really useful Sybase tool and I think it is public domain
but I am not sure since we are a research laboratory.

I like this tool a lot  and prefer it over STP for database design.
