Software to reorg a Sybase DB ?
Hi All,

Is there any software to reorganize a sybase database automatically ,
each table , each index without writing T-sql scripts ?
This product would take care of any change in the structure of data
and indexes.

Platform :Unix, NT

TIA

Software to reorg a Sybase DB ?

1)  What is meant by "reorganize ... each table"?

2)  For reindexing if you use 12.0 then it's pretty simple to generate SQL
that will reorg data-only tables.  Unforunately I can't find a recent
example at one of the sybase.public.sqlserver newsgroups.  I'm also not
aware of performance issues with reorg versus "re-index".  I'm sure that the
former is slower but if you can't kick off users then it appears to be the
way to go.

3) For reindexing clustered allpages tables it's trickier.  The clustered
index must first be dropped and then created.  So any cache bindings or
settings for fillfactor, max rows per page, and reserve page gap for the
clustered index ... will be wiped out.  Also the SQL differs for receating
indexes versus index constraints.  If you use foreign/primary keys they will
have to be dropped & recreated.  Finally one would want to "sp_recompile"
afterwards as with (2) above.  If you use 12.0 and can afford a downtime
window while reindexing the allpages tables (including the non-clustered
indexes) then I can provide a stored procedure that will crank out the SQL
(that will also preserve the bindings, etc.).  (All referential constraints
are dropped at the beginning and added at the end so a window is needed.)

Software to reorg a Sybase DB ?
Yes, ProActive DBA.  It will first analyze your database to determine which
tables need to be defragmented and which indices require updating.  Then,
using a threshold based script it will perform maintenance only where
required.
