 Sybase backup vi NetWorker

I'm new to all of this so I beg your forgiveness if I am rehashing
an old thread.  I was recently put in charge of a new Sun/Sybase server
(there is a Sybase DBA, but I am in charge of backups).  I know we have
the Legato product 'NetWorker' in house on our NetWare LAN and I would
like to use it and the tape jukebox to back up UNIX and Sybase.  The
people from Legato told me there is another product from DataTools, Inc.
called 'SQL-BackTrack' that will allow NetWorker to back up Sybase.
Lines: 15

I would like to know if anyone has heard of these products and has
any experience or knowledge of how well they work with Sybase.  Also,
I would appreciate anyone's 2 cents on the merits/pitfalls of not using
Sybase's backup server.

Thanks in advance

I have not worked with SQL BackTrack, though I have read rave reviews
on the product in this group and others.  They provide an on-line demo
that you might want to check out.  Just telnet to demo.datatools.com
and type "demo" to run their demonstration.  They also have a tech
support number you can call if you have questions or need help during
the demo (415) 617-9117.

Also, at the Sybase conference in San Jose, when users were asking
Sybase representatives about adding capabilities to their backup server,
they indicated that those features would be worked on.  They also
referred those users to SQL BackTrack if they needed those capabilities
now.  Some of those features being able to backup and restore a single
table, you can stream multiple dumps to a tape, etc.

sql-backtrack is a great product (at least on 4.9.2 under sun os). we use
it for all our backup & restore stuff. there is a beta version out for
system-10 which i understand works fine.

good luck.

Steve,

SQL-BackTrack 2.0 was released back in July.  The 2.0 version supports
both System 10 as well as 4.x.  It's great to hear that you like our
product, by the way!

I have used Legato Networker to back up both UNIX and Sybase, and can report
that the product works very well.  Some specifics on our configuration:

Legato NLM running on Novell 3.11 filer server
10 tape 8mm jukebox (not sure of make)
7 Novell file servers on world-wide WAN
Sun SparcServer 690 running SunOS 4.1.3
Sybase 4.9.1
SQL-Backtrack (not sure of version, this was 1 year ago)

Both the Sun box and SQL-Backtrack appear as regular clients to Legato.  It
doesn't care what they are.  Sybase and UNIX backups don't have to be
coordinated with each other or with Novell backups.  We made backups
of all three asyncronously, though there is a mechanism to have your
Sybase backups "kicked off" as part of your Unix backups.

Since you already have Networker, you need three additional things:
SQL-Backtrack
SQL-Backtrack Legato module
Legato UNIX module

I suggest calling both Legato and Datatools for more specifics, pricing, etc.

Good luck!
