using CONVERT to search binary documents

Hi!

We are planning to store Word for Windows documents within our Sybase
database.  We will also need to search these documents for certain strings.
One of the programmers used the following method to search:

SELECT *
FROM my_table
WHERE LOCATE( convert(long varchar, blob_column), 'search string') > 0

My question: Is this logically equivalent to a

WHERE blob_column LIKE '%search_string%'

Given that we want to search a binary document for certain strings, is this
a way to do it?  Anyone else done this?
