Newbie: Sybase ASE 11.9.2 vs 11.5.1
I'm about to deploy Sybase (on Sun Solaris) and would like to know if I
should use ASE 11.9.2 instead of 11.5.1. I'm mainly concerned about the
stability of 11.9.2 vs that of 11.5.1.

Thanks in advance.

Before you deploy the version number of your choice, you may want to keep
in mind the future versions of Sybase on Solaris. My understanding is that
from ver. 11.9.3, Sybase Server requires Solaris 7, running in 64-bit mode.

So you may want to upgrade to Solaris 7 now (and save the hassle later)
and then install the version of Sybase you choose. As for stability issues,
our shop has been using 11.9.2 for 2 months or so on our development
servers. No major problems yet (crossing my fingers) ;)

Thank you for the info, Nauman. I was informed by DBAs (from other
dep.) that, with 11.5.1, they have experienced problems in the prod.
environ. which did not appeared in the dev. environ. due to the fact
that the Sybase server was experiencing much greater loads in prod.
Thus, I wonder 11.9.2 would follow the same pattern or worse.

Also, base on your experience, what do you think of Sybase's support?

Sybase support... well don't need some one to read me off their site ;).
It really depends on the person taking the call.
In the development environment, I did prepare some load generating
scripts.. most of the problems were basically the server conducting table
scans for queries that 11.0.3.2 used indexes. It seems that 11.9.2 is
picky (a lot more) when converting float to int etc. If a query specified
lookup on an integer field say with a statement like " where ID= 4." then
the optimizer would conduct a table scan. Yes Iknow.. sloppy coding.. but
these things did not show up earlier.

I  upgraded to 11.9.2 on Sun Solaris from 11.0.3 on SGI.  The server itself
has been very stable.  I've been in production now for 3 weeks.  The biggest
pain I encounters was migrating my stored procedures to 11.9.2.  For some
reason previous versions did a lot more implict conversions and now 11.9.2
doesn't.  I had some simply not compile and some just just don't work
anymore.  I don't know if this is new to 11.9.x or if it existed in 11.5.x.

Just my $.02 worth

What were the issues? Reserved words? I did a recent upgrade from
11.0.3.3 to 11.9.2.1 with a huge number of sprocs and had no
        problems.

We found 11.9.2 to be a very solid release.  It corrected several problems
we had with 11.5.1.  I'd go with 11.9.2

Go for 11.9.2. Support for 11.5 will be discontinued by June 2000 (or
something like that), and 11.9.2 is at least as stable as 11.5.
