Anyone out there seen this problem before?

The o/s is Unixware 7.0.1, using IDS 7.30.UC2

The user has run a dbexport, but when running the dbimport, the =
following message appears after the first table is created:-
Load file has different number of columns than table.

How could this happen and how does one get around this issue?

check your DBDELIMITER environment variable.

see the header of dbexport file, one line like this

{ DATABASE syspgm4gl  delimiter | }

the "|" is the delimiter on the unloaded files, if you have one DBDELIMTER
variable set to other value than "|" the dbimport will not work.

Other cuase may be values in char field with containts characters like the
delimiter.

example:

one table with one field

field=name
value="Peter|Pete"

in the unload file

Peter|Pete

and the dbimport will fail with the same error  "Load file has...."

I hope this help you. sorry for my english.

Usually it is caused by a character or TEXT column containing a field
delimiter character (default: |).
