 Logical logs usuage

We are running baan with informix...  Our logical logs are 50 meg
Most of the month we are using 25 - 30 logs per day (1.5 gb)  and at
monthend time it can go up to 80 logs per day (4 gb)

Has anyone else noticed this trend.  Would you consider this to be
normal ???

Well that depends,
Is your question to do with the fact that you use more logs at month-end?
Well that seems reasonable, you are probably doing more things.

Is your question to do with the sheer amount of logs that you are using =
both on a daily basis, and at month end?
Well, how much activity are you getting on your system, how big's your =
system and what do you do with it?

If you think that you are using too many logs then check the logging state =
of your database.  If you have it set to unbuffered logging then every =
committed transaction, which probably includes every singleton sql =
statement, is going to write a 32k (I think) block to the log, mostly =
composed of white space.
If you set it to buffered logging then you will use an order of magnitude =
less logs but must accept the fact that in the event of a crash you will =
lose whatever is in the buffer when the system goes down.  It is horses =
for courses.  Personally all my databases are set to buffered logging.
