upgrading OS HP-UX 10.20->11i DB restore required?

HP-UX 10.20
K560 4-way
IDS 2000 9.21.UC2
30 gigs worth of RAID10 raw chunks

I am about to upgrade my OS from HP-UX 10.20 32bit to 11i 32bit.
I have a new version of informix 9.21.HC5 for 11i ready to install.

My question:
Do I have to:
  1. unload all my data with an ontape -s
  2. install the new informix software
  3. restore all the data
(Or I guess I could use dbexport if I recreate all the chunks/dbspaces
before I dbimport)

  OR

Can I somehow have the new Informix s/w use the existing
chunks/dbspaces w/o having to unload/reload all the data?

Any help appreciated.

It's an upgrade.  Anything that can go wrong, will, at the worst
possible moment.  Give yourself as many opportunities for recovery as
you can.

Back up your database.  Then you can restore it if the OS upgrade fails.
Then export it, and squirrel that away somewhere before you bring down
the system.

If you don't lose your database disks as part of the OS upgrade, install
the new server and see if it will up-version the disk-based structures
(you're still playing in 32-bit space, so it may do this automagically
for you).  If it doesn't, rebuild your dbspaces and import.

Read the Informix installation and upgrade guides, and the release
notes.  They'll give you a few pointers, too.

Regards,

You are changing operating systems, so I guess you will have to export and
import your data. I've never upgraded operating systems myself, only
database versions.

If it was the database only, you could have done an in-place upgrade. My
guess is that
you cannot upgrade the OS in place without affecting the software that is
installed
on the server.

And like I read in the other post, make backups - very important. And
remember you
must be able to restore the entire system - opsys and database.
Keep a copy of onstat -d somewhere, just in case. You want to know the exact
layout of your database if anything goes wrong.

Backup and restore won't work. You cannot restore onto a different version
of
Informix.
You'll have to take the long route here (unless I'm wrong about the opsys
upgrade - someone please correct me if I'm wrong).
