We are also looking at Hyperscript, and the first impression is - Slow!
We saw the product at a vendor's facility, with the client being a 386/33MHz PC
(8 MB RAM) and the server a DEC Ultrix machine. The engine was Online 5.0 . All the
demo apps seem to use a spreadsheet for displaying bitmaps and other screen
elements like buttons, etc, and screen refresh was pitifully slow. It used
to draw the bitmaps cell by cell on the spreadsheet. Also, there seemed to be
other problems like PgUp/PgDn causing the spreadsheet to scroll, taking the
bitmap with it. Randomly typed text on the bitmap (after clicking on the bitmap
- in effect, on a spreadsheet cell) is echoed, and is then painted over.
Even if the server was not a terribly fast machine, at least the user interface
should have responded better, as normal MS Windows apps are reasonably fast on
such a machine.
We have not had the opportunity to see the products on either a 486 machine, or
a SPARC (are the tools available on SPARCs ?) with a local database. We are
worried that if the MS Windows version of the tool is slow, the X Windows cersion,
with all its layers and modules, will be unacceptably slow.
Other than performance, the tool does seem quite easy to learn and use. The
language is quite nice, and the visual layouts are above average, though not of
the quality of the character-based tools.
Overall, quite a solid product, but the performance seems like a major worry. Will
an end user tolerate cell-by-cell repainting and other speed-busters when his
other MS Windows apps move much faster ?
Please email/post opinions, experiences with Hyperscript, ViewPoint, etc. We have
to select our tools before long, and I am scared to jump ...
Thanks,
