NOTRANS in tbstat -u & Extra Back-ends

 NOTRANS in tbstat -u & Extra Back-ends

Background: We're running OnLine 5.00, I-Star 5.00 and 4GL/SQL 4.10
            on RS/6000's.

Question: Is there a relationship between "tbstat -u" transaction
entries with a NOTRANS isolation level and runaway turbos (turbos with
no front-end process.) I have noticed a definite slowing down in
response time when a number of NOTRANS transactions are reported.

For example, we have had 150 turbos on database clients (front-ends)
and over 300 turbos on the server (back-ends) -- many [or most] of
the extra turbos seem to be NOTRANS!  The OnLine Administrator's
Guide doesn't provide much information.

Also does anyone know why isql/dbaccess takes sooo long sometimes
to exit?  I wonder if there's a connection?

Is this over an I-Star link?  I've seem the same symptoms on my Pyramid 12ES.

because my 5.0 Informix cannot talk to my 4.11 over I-Star.

I've isolated the exit problem to tcp/ip problems.  Seems that Informix is
holding the host socket open for a certain period of time ( "SO_LINGER"
parameter) after the client requests a close of the socket.  WE're getting the
same symptoms with a home-brew i-star clone, so we think it has something to do
with the tcp/ip implementation.  Try this......while it's waiting to close,
do a netstat and see what your sockets are doing.  If it's in a "FIN_WAIT2"
status, you are seeing the same thing we are.  There are some related bug
reports in Informix-Link.  Search for "star and hang".
