Informix and Amdahl Set New Performance Record With TPC-B Benchmark Results

Menlo Park, Calif (September 28, 1993)   Informix Software, Inc.
(NASDQ:IFMX) and Amdahl Corporation (AMEX:AMH) today announced
record "TPC-B" benchmark results for overall performance and
price/performance, better than any system ever tested.  The Amdahl
5995-4570M system, running the INFORMIX-OnLine database server, set
a performance record of 1,116.44 transactions per second (tpsB)
with a cost of ownership of $20,670 per tpsB.

"This new benchmarking record reiterates Informix's position as the
performance leader in RDBMS technology," said Steve Sommer, vice
president of marketing at Informix. "With the INFORMIX-OnLine
database and high-end computer systems such as Amdahl, customers
are assured superior throughput and value."

According to Mike Orr, Amdahl Open Systems acting general manager
and vice president, "This benchmark demonstrates the value of
Amdahl's 5995M line of Super Servers and our UTS UNIX operating
system for enterprise-scale applications. The provision of industry
leading performance to our established base of large-systems
customers underlines our commitment to the UTS on 5995M Super
Servers.

"With our recently announced new offerings for the server market,
we intend to continue delivering high-capacity, high-availability, and
high-performance open systems to meet the needs of today's
customers for scalable and distributed environments," Orr added.

The TPC-B benchmark was developed by the Transaction Processing
Performance Council (TPC) of Los Altos, California. The TPC is a
consortium of leading manufacturers and users dedicated to the
development of objective, industry-wide performance benchmark
specifications for commercial online transaction processing (OLTP).
The TPC-B benchmark specification is designed to test the stress
load of a database through a single transaction type. The simple repeatable
unit of work tests the database system's basic components such as
disk input/output, moderate system and application execution time
and transaction integrity.

About Amdahl Super Servers and UTS
The 5995M line of mainframe computers is the latest series of
general-purpose, high-performance processors developed, manufactured,
sold and serviced by Amdahl.  Amdahl's UTS system is a commercial, System V
based, UNIX operating system for mission-critical mainframe applications
offering enhanced availability, scalability, reliability, security, and
serviceability on large-scale servers, important for enterprise-wide
applications.

About INFORMIX-OnLine
INFORMIX-OnLine is a high-performance on-line transaction
processing (OLTP) database server that provides high availability, data
integrity, and multimedia data management capabilities.

Features of INFORMIX-OnLine include stored procedures, which can
reduce message traffic in a client/server environment; ANSI
SQL-89-compliant declarative integrity constraints, which bring
added security to a database by enforcing a set of safety checks on
all applications accessing the data; and distributed updates with
two-phase commit recovery.

INFORMIX-OnLine supports Informix's entire line of SQL-based
application development tools as well as a large number of
third-party application development tools and runs on a wide range
of UNIX-based computer systems in stand-alone or networked
environments.

Availability
INFORMIX-OnLine is currently available from Informix Software. The
5995M processors and UTS operating system are offered by Amdahl
Corporation.

About Amdahl
Amdahl is a major supplier of powerful mainframe computers, data
storage subsystems, SPARC mid-range servers, UNIX system software,
applications development and production software, and a wide range
