yes, but it did take some searching.
i suppose you have an inet or istar on the 5.x side.

on the 7.x side :
my $INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts contains a line

Intel486        sesoctcp        Intel486          sqlexec

with in /etc/services : sqlexec   1525/tcp

with Intel486 the name of the remote 5.x server

"my_dbase" on path "/dbase"

This gave me access to my database.
About you trying to select something from not the current database, well, i
don't know :-(

Guy.

Hi,

We access informix 5 databases from informix 7 regularly. We have never
faced any kind of problem.

What is the error number u get ?

Check if u r using the correct sqlhosts file and sqlexecd program is
running on the remote host?

Put an entry for the 5.x engine in sqlhosts and /etc/services, and it works
fine.

I need to note that this is from one online instance to another. I.E. My
Informix 5 is running on a 580 UNIX AIX system and my Informix 7 is
running on a SMP UNIX AIX system.

Most have retuned info going from se(UNIX) and se(PC) engines. I need to
know concerning online instatance from one UNIX box to another.

Thanks!

Do I need to do this via a program (E/SQL,4GL...etc.) or can I do this
from dbaccess/isql? Also, my orginal posting had a typo in my syntax.  I
had the database and dbservername var mixed. So it should have read:

When I state hostname this is the hostname of the UNIX machine, should I
be using the server name of the informix configuration as defined in the
config and sqlhosts file?

I keep getting an 908 error.

U should use the server name set up on remote host and this server
should have an entry in your sqlhosts file.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I'm working this now. I have to get my
Admin to update the /etc/services file. Once done I'll test again. If I
have a problem, you all will hear about it.

Boy did you all save me some night reading and this I am really thankful
for!!!!

} Yes you should be able to as long as both databases have the same
} logging status, you've configured the 5.x instance for remote
} connections and your 7.x system for remote connections.  Also,
} the syntax for the select would be:
}

}
} dbserver_name being the 1st column of the sqlhosts file entry
} which should be something like this:
}
} dbserver_name on<soc|tli>tcp            hostname        servicesname
}
} Also if you included what error you got it might be helpful as well.
} Hope this helps you a bit.
