IDS 9.21 and Multi-Homed interface problems

Greetings everyone,

I have a bit of an issue with our primary db server.  The Data
Warehouse  group finally moved their software onto our new SunFire 280R
server (which is also what the Informix instance uses).  This machine has
been running quite well for the Informix 9.21 server in the past 3 months
that it has been on it.  But when they moved the DWH stuff on it, a second
network interface was plumbed with their old IP address attached.  They
further more updated the Domain Name server so that it would round-robin
the hostname that we use (www2) and the one they use (warehouse)  so that
we get the added bandwidth of the 2 network interfaces and multi-homing.

Unfortunately, Informix seems to be dead set into only listening on one of
the 2 IP addresses.

So what does it take to get Informix to listen for soc/tli connections on
both ethernet interfaces?  Here is a bit of information gathered as I was
figuring out what was wrong with our ODBC connections (some would
work..some would not).

Help me fix IDS to listen on both IPs that are on this machine.  Thanks for
your help.

Scott Fendley

look right to me.

Did you add on_demo to the /etc/services file?  Actually, you can
use the same service if it's running on a different ethernet port?
I don't see clio.uark.edu in the /etc/hosts file.  Is the name
getting resolved to the correct IP address?

IDS 9.21 and Multi-Homed interface problems

Interesting catch there....I am wondering if that maybe causing issues
there in the network arp resolution.  Clio.uark.edu is our development
server...totally different machine.  I should have cut that line to avoid
the confusion.  Didn't mean to have you chase down the on_demo stuff at
all.  So I have something else to chase a bit.  So basically, the 2 IPs
for the the physical machine should both see the on_prod port being open
when informix is up and running correct?  Do I need to put a line in sql
hosts with the 2 IP addresses of the machine as the on_prod server?

on_prod         ontlitcp        www2.uark.edu    on_prod
on_prod         ontlitcp        130.184.5.90    on_prod
on_prod         ontlitcp        130.184.5.200   on_prod

here is the snipit of my /etc/services that deals with the Informix stuff.

You need a different server name for each interface and each server
name should be listed in DBSERVERALIASES in onconfig.  Don't know what the
first line is.  Try

Quote:
> on_prod_tcp1               ontlitcp        130.184.5.90    on_prod
> on_prod_tcp2               ontlitcp        130.184.5.200   on_prod

        and in $ONCONFIG

        DBSERVERALIASES on_prod_tcp1 on_prod_tcp2

IDS 9.21 and Multi-Homed interface problems

Scott,

Try this in your SQLHOST:

on_prod     ontlitcp     130.184.5.*     on_prod

make sure you bounce the engine.
