O.S. is HP-UX Ver 11.0 running on a HP N class server. Several NT, SUN based applications lookup the database (via ODBC) along with a traditional Informix r4gl application running on the HP N Class server. It is fair to say this would be considered the mission critical application amongst all the apps that reference the database. Most operations are via this App. Most others just use the DB for lookup purposes. (There is a small amount of updating from some of these apps) Q1) What are the benefits of upgrading to Version 9. ( Dont afraid to be too technical) Q2) We received a quotation of close to a million Euro for such an upgrade. We currently have a 128 user licence agreement with IBM/Informix. Is this consistent with your own experiences ? Bill Dar #2 / 3	Upgrading IDS from 7.31 to 9.xx We just purchased an upgrade from 7.31.UD5 on dynix/ptx to 9.4.XXX on AIX 5.2 and we also had some sticker shock regarding the price. We had a 700 user license. Our sales rep at IBM converted us to a CPU based license and it was a lot cheaper. You may want to look into that. Zunino, Kath #3 / 3	Upgrading IDS from 7.31 to 9.xx We've been running on IDS 7.x for many years on the HP product line; we upgraded to 9.30.FC1 on 64-bit HPUX 11i on N4000 (and HP K boxes) about 8 months ago very successfully. Multiple engines, multiple machines. Been pretty stable since conversion, but there were some quirks running replication between 7 and 9 during our conversion phase. We went to 64-bit IDS 9 from 32-bit IDS 7 - the main reason was increased memory capacity of IDS 9 and wanted to move to a 64-bit platform. With several hundred users attaching to an instance, on IDS 7 we were pushing the edge of maximum memory per machine and per instance - with IDS 9, we're now using about 3 GB on our largest engine and 3.5 GB on that machine. Secondary reasons were the increased functionality in the IDS 9 product, for example; improvements in ER; the ability to embed JAVA or C (which we have not explored as yet); user-defined datatypes; future product enhancements; etc. Some of our favorite features include the dynamic locks, the dynamic log allocation, and the ability to block database creation. I'm not sure when the 'block database creation' is officially supported, but it works in the 9.30 product. I block database creation in my production engines, but not in the development engines. Not sure about the pricing...
