 7.31 install on W2K

Go ahead...make fun of me if you must...
I'm 'trying' to install 7.31TD3 on W2K with SP1.
INFORMIXDIR=D:\elite\informix
INFORMIXSERVER=ol_wallace
INFORMIXSQLHOSTS=\\ELITEW2K
DBLANG=EN_US.CP1252

I think I'm having the same problem another person posted about here (maybe
in the last month or two?). I seem to have an instance started but when I
type onstat - I get "shared memory not initialized for INFORMIXSERVER
'ol_wallace'" and my services show ol_wallace is started and I appear to
have no error messages to the contrary. My log:
Thu Jan 03 01:34:39 2002

01:34:39  DR: DRAUTO is 0 (Off)
01:34:39  Informix Dynamic Server Version 7.31.TD3     Software Serial
Number AA
D#J266866
01:34:40  Informix Dynamic Server Initialized -- Shared Memory Initialized.
01:34:40  Physical Recovery Started.
01:34:40  Physical Recovery Complete: 0 Pages Restored.
01:34:40  Logical Recovery Started.
01:34:43  Logical Recovery Complete.
        0 Committed, 0 Rolled Back, 0 Open, 0 Bad Locks

01:34:44  Dataskip is now OFF for all dbspaces
01:34:44  Init operation complete - Mode Online
01:34:44  On-Line Mode
01:34:55  Checkpoint Completed:  duration was 0 seconds.
01:34:55  Checkpoint loguniq 3, logpos 0x106018

So it seems like I have an instance started...just can't get to it. (I'm
logged in as informix, administrator rights, etc...)

I just can't find the post. Can someone jog my memory on the subject of the
post so I can find it...or alternatively tell me what the solution was
(other than change to Unix?)?

 7.31 install on W2K

I know of a similar problem on Solaris/SPARC.  If the engine's first
shared memory segment is segment zero (0) then at some point Solaris
loses track of that segment so you cannot attach new apps to it.
The solution for us (Informix and Sun are still fighting over who is
causing the problem) has been to write a small app that allocates a
shared memory segment and run it from the startup BEFORE oninit so
that Informix's first segment is segment #1.  Once the segment has
disappeared (ipcs -a will not show that segment) the only thing you
can do is crash it and restart it or live with network connections
only for a while and no onstat/oncheck/onmonitor/onspaces/etc.

You are not trying to access the servers console via Terminal Services are
you? If so then this is the reason for the error (check out defect 151637).
Currently in IDS 7.x and 9.x you can only run Informix command sessions via
the servers console or using a 3rd party product like PC-Anywhere.

Ooooh, hark at her!
You're usually one of the first to defend Microsoft when everyone else says
NT is bollocks!

I think you're confusing "soundly" with "noisily". A very American
thing to do...

Actually I'd be more inclined to blame IBM/Informix than Microsoft. Terminal
Services has been around along time now and you don't have to do much to an
application in order to detect Terminal Services are active and adjust the
application at runtime accordingly.

I expect to see a lot of W2K users getting this problem, since W2K includes
Terminal services for Remote Administration out of the box, so its to be
expected that people will use it.  Hopefully IBM/Informix will address this
in a future release soon.
