It was a dark and stormy night.  Our application has mysteries and
miracles.  We print various forms and reports both in portrait mode and
landscape mode to HP laser printers.  One minute it's portrait, then,
through the miracle of ObjectPAL we change the printer orientation to
landscape.

But for reasons which I hope you can uncover, the fields on the report
start inflating, pushing information off the report around enough to
ruin our efforts to print on pre-printed forms.

The mystery doesn't end here.  The fields shrink back to normal size
when I exit PDOXWIN or when I change (again through the miracle of
ObjectPAL) the printer to a second printer and then back to the first
printer.  I don't even have to use the second printer to aleviate the
problem.  Both can be the HP laser printers.

Any ideas??

If I am not mistaken, in reports you should anchor all fields, tables etc
to a specific piece of real estate in the design. Also in the design you
have options to prevent particular fields from growing in size, wrapping of
text, etc. Check out your design options

Do you have the latest patch installed?  We had this problem, but patch
#4 eliminated it.  We still have printer problems related to memory
resources, but overall performance is much much better with the patch.

You mention you still have problems with memory resources, we (our
developer Philip Parys and I) are having problems with a repetitive routine
that will repeat from 50 - 150 times, each time printing a report, and then
stop printing but keep running (thinking it is printing). Watching the
memory resources at the same time the memory in use creeps slowly up and
up. We have switched to an NT 4.0 workstation with 64 Mb ram and are now at
the top end of the 50-150 bracket. Does this sound anything like your
problem and if so do you have any ideas ?

I went with Seagate Software's Crystal Reports Pro 5.0. Besides these
two problems being solved, you get the ability to output any report to
email. You can also generate the output in MS Word format, HTML or
others. Access to the package is through DLL calls; there is a Visual
Basic DLL that makes most engine calls available with only simple data
types. (There is an OCX but it won't work with Paradox.) There is no
royalty on distribution of the Crystal Reports runtime library. Another
benefit: you can generate reports for either Paradox or Delphi. I've
tried ReportSmith and found it sorely lacking. If you have ReportSmith
(from Delphi or C++), you are eligible for an upgrade to Crystal Reports
(around $150 I believe).

If ANYONE has ideas beyond waiting for the next version and hoping this
problem is fixed, please share them!  One thing I have wondered about,
for instance, is if Borland Report Smith has this problem.  If not, this
would be a possible solution, but I would rather not re-design all of my
reports and purchase additional software unless essential.

Hey, I have the same problem; however what I'm looking for is a utility
that could be executed from within Paradox or Runtime to recover the lost
system resources. Anybody ever heard of such an animal?
