I encountered the exact same thing this week.  No idea of the cause yet.

A well reported problem that only occurs w/ Version 5. The solution is
to either get a different CDROM driver or just put any junk CDROM in the
drive and leave it there. As long as there is a CDROM it doesn't care
which one.

I am using Paradox 5 on Win95.  There are about 5 applications I have
written with not too many problems, at least nothing I couldn't work
around, until now.

I have about 6 reports that print out. For years they have worked well,
until recently.

When I attempt to print a report I get an error "Can't find drive e:\,
e:\ being the CD Rom drive.  It seems to of happened all of the sudden.
I haven't changed any code or made any modifications to the
applications.  The only solution I have come up with, is to make sure a
CD is in the drive at all times.  It doesn't make any difference what CD
I use.  Really wierd!

Anybody else have this problem?  What might cause it, and what can I do
to resolve it?

Unfortunately, the solution is to just put a disk in the ROM drive.
From what I've heard its a bug happening somewhere between Pdox and
Windows.

In my experience, I have found that this comes about from having
developed a system using Paradox installed on say your D drive.
Then, you give the system to a client, who only has a C drive and a
CD-ROM (being their D drive) and Paradox goes looking for a settings
file on D drive (your original Paradox drive).  The only way I've found
to reliably fix the problem is, as mentioned above, to throw any CD at
all in the drive!

Hope this helps,
