 Text file pre-processor

I have a HUGE text file that I need imported into a database.

I would like to cut the individual lines in the test file and place tabs
between all the relavent information, which should then be easier to
import.

basically, I'm wondering of there are any shareware programs out there
which are screen oriented, and simply take a text file and cut it up into
tab delimited records.

Basically I would like the program's screen to look like this.

           Rec1     Rec2   Rec3       Rec4

         |aaaaaa|bbbbbbb|ccccccccc|dddddddddd|
         |aaaaaa|bbbbbbb|ccccccccc|dddddddddd|
         |aaaaaa|bbbbbbb|ccccccccc|dddddddddd|
         |aaaaaa|bbbbbbb|ccccccccc|dddddddddd|
         |aaaaaa|bbbbbbb|ccccccccc|dddddddddd|
         ^      ^       ^         ^          ^
Lines are movable, and program automatically calculates start
and stop position for each record.  You can mark the records you
want to extract then the program extracts all marked fields
into a tab delimited file, or possibly a .dbf file.

The reason I'm looking for something screen oriented is I do alot of
importing like this...and the database I have is set up to ask me start and
stop positions of each record, then it imports them into its database.

Does anybody know of a program like this?

Thanks in advance

Sean:

I do a lot of similar work and for my uses, I find that WordPerfect Macros
work just fine.

I realize that this isn't shareware, but WP is the most common of the word
processors - so if you own a copy, this should solve your problems.

Macros can be programmed to give the "front end" you desire.

There are, however, a couple of considerations:

How large is large (for the text file you want to break up) and..
How hefty are your desktop computer resources

WordPerfect - especially WPWIN, and I'm guessing WP6.0 though I haven't
worked with that one - can run pretty darn slow on large search and
replace operations it you're getting a tight on HD space and Ram.

For a less elegant WP solution, import the file into WP, start "Macro
Record" with cursor at beginning of the first file line. Use arrow keys to
place separators. When finished with first line go down and HOME LEFT
ARROW. Stop the macro. Now run the macro using repeat ([ESC]) to run the
macro for the approximate number of lines in your file.

Hope this helps

I have used Quattro Pro to do something similar to this.  You can mark the column
locations and then write it out in Paradox format.  I think you are limited to
