Pdox/DOS 3.5 "Out of disk space"

I've still got a few Pdox/DOS 3.5 scripts I use for converting data sent
to me by customers.  I recently got a new computer with a 13 gig hard
disk, and when these scripts are processing rather huge files (involving
insert queries and scanning to manipulate text, usually), they'll often
stop, and give me an error message saying "Insufficient disk
space....".  The tables involved are no larger than 2mb in size.  I've
got 9 gig of space left, and the machine has 128mb of RAM.

The situation seems somewhat better when running Pdox in a window,
rather than full screen.  And, the exact same scripts ran fine on slower
machines with far less RAM & disk space, so the problem doesn't seem to
be related to the scripts themselves.  Is there a startup parameter, or
PIF setting I may need to fiddle with?

Any clues would be appreciated!

Doug,

PDoxDOS (all versions) sometimes cannot handle very large drives. This is
addressed at my website, with a product named "lesspace". You can download a
version of the code, to see if it resolves your problem. You could also
solve it by making a smaller partition...etc...

And, you are also advised to NOT use 3.5 under Windows. Version 4.02 is
totally compatible with 3.5, and IS designed to run under Windows.

pdoxdos 3.x can only "see" 1 gig free space.. you need lesspace, which you
can get from my web site..

you should not use pdoxdos 3.x under *any* version of windows.. you should
be using 4.02.. 3.x memory management is incompatible with windows.. you
could *easily* end up with damaged tables..

Steve/Mike:

OK....I understand this, but the exact same scripts (operating on the same
tables) run fine on my laptop, which has only 250mb free.  I'll check out
lessspace anyway.....but I'm still curious why the scripts are happy with less
disk space than more.

As far as table damage....I guess I've been lucky. I've been running 3.5 under
WIN 3.1, 95b and 98SE for years, with no problems.  Now you've got me spooked,
though. :-)

exactly.. there's less than a gig free, so it works.. more than a gig and the
internal math fails and it thinks there's a negative amount of space..

I *should* have you spooked on that one.. it's not like you're new to the
forums/newsgroups.. you've just been ignoring something *very* important for how
many years now? <smile>

I don't KNOW how long I've been ignoring it, Steve. I haven't been watching!
(Wait...isn't that what you just said?) :-)
