 record and table locking

anyone have suggestions on the best way to lock tables and records for a
networked environment.  my problem is that i have two tables that users edit
mainly, table1 and table2.  unfortunately, the only way i have been able to
prevent corrupted tables is to explicitly lock the tables whenever a user
edits any part of the table.  this is inconvenient for the other others.  i
would like to lock the record if the user is editing the record, and lock the
table if the user is inserting or deleting a record from the table.  is this a
good idea? or will it still cause corrupted tables?  maybe someone has a
better idea.....
