In other GOOF Borland has said that SQL LINK 2.0 is no longer available!!! That you
MUST buy DELPHI to get SQL LINK 2.5 (not sold as a separate product). Someone from
Borland had better reverse this and fast!

That's very incorrect- this was issued today:
To: ALL

Borland SQL Links version 2.0 is not dead!  Borland continues to sell,
market and support Borland SQL Links.   The product is still available
for $99.95.   SQL Link is an important component of our product strategy
to deliver broad data connectivity to our users.  We apologize for the
mistake made with Ms Dolan's order.

We understand that many of our Paradox for Windows users
experience problems with SQL Links version 2.0 if they have
IDAPI 1.3 (officially called Borland Database Engine (BDE) 2.5).
The good news is we will release Borland SQL Links 2.5 for Windows
for Paradox 5.0 users to solve the compatibility problem.  Borland SQL
Links 2.5 for Windows will be available early August to Paradox 5.0
for Windows users for $99.95.  This product will include SQL Links
version 2.5 (native links to Oracle, Sybase, Informix 5.0 and Interbase)
and Borland Database Engine (BDE) 2.5.

How'd all this get started anyway?

It started by Borland returning a check sent for SQL Links 2.0 stating that they no
longer were selling this product. Then today they said OOPS "sorry for the
inconvenience" and that they were releasing version 2.5 in August.  Borland appears
to be one confused company right now (maybe Novell's takeover bid has something to
do with it?).

Later.

I'm confused, I remember seeing this piece of incorrect
information yesterday, and I thought I responded to it.

Allow me to do more followup:
you -CAN- buy SQL Links 2.0.

It's very simple, call borl's order desk and ask:
800-331-0877.

SQL Links 2.5 aren't even released quite yet, as I recall,
but I'm quite sure you'l be able to buy them seperately when they are.

        Lemme know where I'm wrong.

That's nice, but when are they going to solve the OTHER big problem with
IDAPI 1.3 -- it's failure to handle network file sharing under Lantastic
6.0?

I've been knocking on Tech Support's door about this for THREE MONTHS now,
with no answer at all...

cheers,
peter

>Maybe the problem's with Lantastic...

Two reasons why not:

1) The problem goes away if we (and others with the same problem) revert to
earlier versions of IDAPI under the SAME version of Lantastic

2) See below, extracted from a Web site listing many Delphi bugs:

==== Begins

TTable cannot access Paradox tables on Lantastic 6.0 servers.

Description:
Borland has acknowleged an incompatibility between BDE/IDAPI 1.3 (shipping
with Delphi) and Lantastic 6.0 network operating system.  This bug prevents
access to Paradox tables that are located on a redirected server drive.
This affects not only the Delphi data-aware components, but Database Desktop
as well.  Attempting to access the table usually results in an error message
similar to "Not initialized for accessing network files."

Solution:
The only known workaround is to use a format other than Paradox.

==== Ends

When we consider that this bug PREVENTS use of Delphi database apps on
Lantastic 6.0 servers, and has been around and known since v1.0 release, the
lack of a fix is simply appalling.
