special table field Record Number

 special table field Record Number

Is there a way to capture the Record Number special table field into the
database?

I have added a column to a table frame.  I have defined the field as
Record Number.  Thus, the field autoincrements for each new record,
beginning with 1.

However, the data is not captured on the underlying table.  Is there a
way to capture it?

Example:  Screen Display

Record Number   Date
1               4/19/97
2               4/22/97
3               4/23/97

Table Data:

Record Number   Date
                4/19/97
                4/22/97
                4/23/97

Thank you in advance for your response.
Gary.

I'm not sure why you would want to capture the record number into a
database field unless you were using it for part of a key.  After all,
the record number IS part of the table already.  But if that is the case
I would be careful of the opportunity to "Insert" records into the
table, thus disrupting the sequence.

"Autoincrement" is not a good term as you have used it here, because of
the existance of the autoincrement field type, which might actually be
the option you really need to use, and because record numbering does not
work the same as autoincrementing in that, as explained above, record
nubmers change when you insert or delete records, and autoincrement
field values do not.

Hope this helps,
