 Apache With Filemaker Pro
Hello All,

Going to be integrating a database solution for use on the web. I have
never done this before so I am looking for some guidance.

I was hoping to use apache as the web server, can someone point me in
the right direction to find a filemaker plug-in for apache? Or whatever I
need to get to have apache work with filemaker.

Also, I have heard that there is a CDML plugin for Dreamweaver. Anyone
seen this beast and know where I can get it?

Thanks,
TA

It doesn't work that way. You'll need to have FileMaker running as a separate process, serving its own data, which you can then link to yoru apache site using traditional means (i. e. "http://filemakerserver.yourhost.com")

I have a question obly slightly related to this thread.  We have a web
site being hosted by a commercial hoster (Adgrafix).  They run on Apache.
They have a nicely detailed set of hit statistics, but they don't
accumulate.  I'd like to set up an FM db whereby I can download each day's
batch and import it in, thus creating my own reports & analysis of longer
term activity.

I can do all this, but am short on time (I have bigger and more
interesting FM dragons to slay).  It seems that this is a problem that has
been solved many times already.  Does anyone know of an FM solution (for
sale or not)m that can deal with Apache web stat data?

Ok...

So what does that actually mean?

I have a machine running Filemaker Server. I want to be able to have users
access it from a browser. I will have filemaker unlimited running on a
system (perhaps the same system that is running apache).

Are you saying that in the HTML for the pages that show data from the
database, I will just be requesting information directly from unlimited?

Sorry for the basic level questions here, but I have never done any web
hosting stuff and am really working from the ground floor on this one. Maybe
someone could point me to some good intro information on this that is on the
web.

Isn't the web server connector that ships with FM Unlimited what he is
looking for? As that allows you you make use of features of the web server
like https for example, which filemaker cannot do directly with easy or
customer web publishing.  However, I haven't got much experience with the
web server connector software and can't really speculate on its
compatibility or appropriateness for this task. If anyone knows... please
take over...

In any case even with the webserver connecter you must have FMU running, as
the connector just bridges FM to the WebServer.

The FileMaker Web Server Connector connects to
apache on OSX Server.
IIS and Netscape Enterprise on windows
Appleshare IP and webstar on Mac

It also included the servlet binaries in an unsupported directory for use on
other platforms. I heard second hand someone had gotten those binaries
running on apache under linux but that was all I had heard. In theory since
it is in Java it should run anywhere ;)

Hmmmm.... It sounds like I am going to have to get elbow deep in all this
before I know for sure.

The web server and unlimited will be running on 2000 (the one platform I did
not see you mention as being a known working configuration).

If anyone else has some on the net references or books for me to look at, I
would love to hear about them.

Thanks,
TA

I looked into this a while back and I think you may have compatibility
problem there between the server (hardware, the server(software), and
Filemaker Web Server Connector. It is the latter that actually determines
your options.    Under Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack
3)  it (the FM Server Connector)  will run with these servers
Microsoft IIS 4.0
Microsoft PWS 4.0
Netscape Enterprise Server 3.6.2

With a Mac as a server, your options will include

WebStar 4.0
AppleShare IP 6.2
Apache 1.3.6 on Mac OS X Server 1.0.2

There may be others, but this is what is listed and that seems to rule out
your particular set-up.  In any case, I would be interested in the final
solution and how it works...if you care to share.

Regards

Karel

One more thing...it would seem that your Filermaker Server is not actually
going to do anything for your web deployment. It does not seem to have any
way of actually communicating with the web server and is designed to share
databases using Filemaker application only.
