FileMaker 4.1 Exceeding Host's Capacity (Mac)

FileMaker 4.1 Exceeding Host's Capacity (Mac)
We have FileMaker 4.1v3 running on a Mac (OS 9.2, TCP/IP networking).
We're using it as a server (via regular multiuser, NOT SM Server) for
26 files to 7-10 clients. Each client's running 4.0v3.  When opening
all files on the clients, we get an error about halfway through client
#6 saying it's exceeding the Host's capacity.  Does anyone know if
this is a network thing, a memory thing, a FileMaker thing, or what?

Thanks,

Jeff

It's both a Filemaker and a network thing. There are a limited number of
network sockets available for peer-to-peer networking. Each open file on
the server machine, on EACH GUEST, the guest connections themselves, and
user requests to the files, uses up these sockets. When you run out,
along about guest 6, you cannot create any more connections to the
files.

FM (and I) recommend that with even a moderate number of files, such as
10-15, you step up to FM Server beyond 5 guests. With 26 files, you'll
need it for best performance beyond 3 guests.

If you don't wish to upgrade to FM 5.5 for the server and all guests,
I'd say your best bet is to try to find a copy of FM Server 4 on ebay.
You clearly have exceeded the capacity of peer-to-peer networking and
there is nothing you can do except upgrade to Server or not open all the
files on all the guests.

There is no such beast as FM Server 4 - you'll need to find FM Server
3.0, which woorks perfectly with FM 4.x Clients

Oops, Tim is correct. What can I say? It's been a long time since FM 5
came out. FM 4 is ancient technology. ;)
