FM 4 (Mac) to FM 5.5 (Win)
Hello All

At work we run a database developed on FM Pro 4 on a Mac, but now
funding has arrived for a new PC (we weren't given a choice of
platform). So I need to know if the the latest Windows version of FM Pro
(5.5?) will run a Mac FM Pro 4 file.

I've been to FileMaker's site and I think it's telling me that it won't,
but I thought I'd find out from the people who really know :o).

Is there anyone out there who has done this migration and can help me?

Thanks in advance

Yes, it will. However, once the file is converted to FM 5.5, it cannot
be transferred BACK to FM 4.  DATA can  go back and forth through
exports...but the file format between FM 4 and 5 is different and there
is no reversion.

To convert:

On the Mac, if the file does not have the .fp3 extension on the
filename, rename it using the Filename.fp3 convention. Insert a PC
formatted disk into the Mac, most Macs will read and write to PC disks,
but not the other way around. Copy the file onto the disk and transfer
it to the PC.

On the PC, install and run FM 5.5. Under the File menu, choose Open, and
select the .fp3 file. The program will walk you through converting the
file to 5.5 and saving the old file under another name.

Really, that's all there is to it.

Thanks very much for this Lynn, it seems almost too easy.

The file in question is too big for a floppy so I'll probably send it
via ethernet.

Thanks once again.
