FMP 5 Server vs FMP 5 file hosting, Part II

Another question on the differences between FMP Server vs. regular FMP
hosting files.

I have a bunch of tasks that I run overnight: importing, reporting,
updating, relookups.  These run much faster on the host computer for obvious
reasons.

If I upgrade to FMP Server, it doesn't have a user interface, right?  Does
this mean that these scripts will need to run over the network?  It seems to
me, this would be considerably slower.  Is there a way to tell FMP to run
the files at the server?  How does that work?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

The ability to run filemaker scripts is not available in the server.

One common solution is to have a copy of fmpro installed on the server, and
then at night shut down the server, open the solution in fmpro, run your
scripts, close fmpro, and then reopen the fileset with the server.

There are other more complicated variants you could do, like closing the
server, moving the files to a workstation, and performing the scripts there,
and then transfering them fileset back, if you don't want to run any
applications on the server.

Stuff like this can be scripted with winbatch or applescript.

That's the beauty of running things overnight. Who cares if they are
slower? (Yes, I know they might be so slow that they are still running
when you come in the next morning, but that would be a LOT of
calculations, and some hard looks at the design of the system would be
in order I think).

Plus, don't forget that Server will be faster than regular FM at hosting
the files. The performance hit might not be as bad as you think.

Is this a new thing?  I'm using FMP Server 3, and Schedule gives you
the options to run scripts (although it appears to be Applescripts, not
Filemaker Scripts embedded in the DB)

I think you have answered your own question.
