Q: Layouts for printing and Page Setup

Q: Layouts for printing and Page Setup

How do I create layouts/page setups for printing that will work on any
(unknown) printer that a user has??

Whenever I create a layout nice and tidily on my computer, and then
transfer the database to another computer that uses a different printer
(and printer driver), the database loses all the Page Setup
information, even when it's stored with the script and reverts back to
portrait, US letter size.

It seems silly that I have to go to that users computer and manually
re-set all the page setups and re-save them with the appropriate
scripts.

This makes trying to do a free/shareware database for Internet
distribution impossible.  :-(

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Deselect "Perform without dialog" in the Page Setup script step so that
users have the option to change the settings to what works on their
computers/printers.

Unfortunately that would be a bit too complicated for the complete
novices I'm usually dealing with. What I really need to do is let them
click on a "print" button and it prints how I set it up, with as few
dialog windows (and hence chances to cause problems) as possible.

There isn't much you can do about retaining the Page Setup settings unless
you have access to the machines, and obviously this would be impossible in
the case of freeware/shareware.

You could walk the novice through the print process, however, using a Show
Message script step to tell them what to do each step of the way.  For
example, if the Page Setup must be set to A4 and landscape for optimal
printing, include a message that instructs the user to select those
setting from the Page Setup dialog, immediately prior to the PageSetup
script step.  Then if things go horribly wrong, the user will know to pay
closer attention to the messages next time around.

I was hoping there was a better solution than that, but I guess I'm
stuck.   :-(

It seems very silly, although it probably not FileMaker's fault. More
likely the printer manufacturers need to standardise their drivers, so
we can say "A4, landscape" and that sets ANY printer correctly.
