 relatively simple question (I think)

This is probably a silly/simple question, but I'll ask the group
because it's been plaguing me all morning.  Here goes:

background:
I have a set of databases which teaching assistants use to input
grades into.  Each of these DB's contain 10-20 students and each
student has roughly 10 Labs.  The instructors need to know what
the averages for each lab are per DB so that they may normalize
the grades over the entire course.  So far, I've created a master
DB into which I import all the data from the individual DB's on
a weekly basis.

question:
How do I bring over the Lab average values (these are the summary
fields I created) into the master DB?  It seems like it should be
a relatively simple task, but I get the following error:
"This relationship will not work because the field is not indexed"

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Steve Daniels

 relatively simple question (I think)

Hi Steve -

I'm a little confused by your reference to a relationship.  If you are
importing from one database to another, relationships are irrelevant
and you shouldn't get that message.  You can export summary data from
a database and then import the contents of the export file if the
fields are set up properly ( look for the "Summarize by..." control in
the export dialogue box ) and it sounds as if this may be what you
need to do.  If you are trying to create a relationship between two
databases on a summary field, however, you have already found that it
won't work.  Since relationships must be based on indexed values, and
summary fields have values that change depending on the found set and
sort order, it's not possible to use them in this way.

Although I'm not sure that your solution of duplicate distributed
databases is the optimal one, it should work if you concentrate on
working with the export and import method.  Please let the group know
if you continue to experience problems.  We're happy to help.

Best of Luck -
James

Don't forget to remove the obvious spam block when replying.
I advocate making an address book entry and using it!  Thanks!
