Filemaker Over Telephone Connection

 Filemaker Over Telephone Connection
I am looking for a way to network Filemaker over a telephone connection.

We have a number of databases at our head office that need to be accessed in
realtime by 9 (or more) branch offices.

Has one out there done this in the UK? Can it be done over the internet
using PPTP? Any sugestions would be greatly appreciated - we have looked at
using email to update offline data but this is not acceptable!

As long is the networking protocol you use is TCP/IP ANYone who can connect
to the Internet can access your database in real time. They just go to Open

However, you might consider a Web interface since connecting via modem can
be slooooow...

What would the 'professional' solution be? I need a 24/7 always on full
access solution to this problem!

Can I use PPTP or VPN  with Filemaker to host via the net?

The Proffesional Solution depends on requirements and budget.
I've found 56k fine for most databases end even 33.6 is OK depending on the
database. If all branches are in the local area A BT featureline with 9 (or
more) lines into a network box like a Shiva LAN Rover. I don't think Shiva
exists any more but Nortel probably do one. This is cheap and keeps
everything in your own network. Additionally you can better monitor
connection times and know if speed is issue where any bottlenecks are. This
would probably be way cheaper that buying a VPN with FileMaker Hosting. I
wouldn't trust a VPN off most ISP's. But all the big ones like uunet are
well expensive. Additionally bear in mind that at roughly 4.5 -5 hours
connected per day 64K leased lines become cheaper.
Good luck
