 Exporting HTML

I am using Filemaker 4.0 for the Mac. I have occasion to export data from a
database which will be used on a web page. I try to put HTML into the data
to be exported, but some characters don't export correctly. For example, I
will put <BR> into a field which gets exported, but in the resulting
(exported) file, it shows up as &lt;BR&gt;.

Now, I think I understand what is happening - Filemaker assumes I want a
"<" character to appear in the HTML data, so it converts the "<" to "&lt;".
And that would be okay if I wanted a "<" character in the data, but I
don't. Is there someway to convince Filemaker not to convert these
characters for me?

If you want true HTML-codes to be exported from FMP try exporting as ASCII
file and use calculation fields to create the message you want on the web.
Or try using a global field and a script which fills this field with all the
codes and information you want on the web. Then only export this field once
to a new file.

Succes!

Bill-

Use Calc fields for each component:
Ex. StHTML="<html>", Br field= "<br>" , Sthead= "<head>", EndHead =
"</head>", etc.
and use a Calc field to bring it all together:
HTML Page= StHTML & Sthead & Sttitle & TitleName & Endtitle & EndHead,
etc...

There is an excellent article on building web pages in FileMaker Pro at:

OK, I guess I'm missing something, but:

When I want to do this, I create a calc field as text which contains
the data and html that I want, say like:

= "<html><head><title>" & HTML_Title &
"</title></head><body>" & HTML_Body &
"</body></html>"

I then export a record at a time to files as tab delimited (as FM
doesn't have a plain text export, and I'm only exporting one field
really)

And the fields HTML_Body can have other HTML formatting in it
<b>Test Text</b>...

Of course, these days I generally web-enable the actual database, and
let Web Companion sort it all out for me

Cheers

You could write a script which takes into account each HTML character
entity you'd like to encode, but that would be a lot of work.

One alternative would be to use a tool like WebMerge which will generate
HTML character entities from text:
