Dynamic Value Lists?

 Dynamic Value Lists?

Hello all,

I'm in the process of trying to consolidate a number of
university departmental filemaker databases into one central system, and
have a set of value lists dyamically change depending on what password
is used to access the system.

Let me explain. There is a classes.fp3, faculty.fp3 and schedule fp3
database for each dept. The schedule db displays the list of classes
(from classes) and the list of faculty (form faculty) in pop up lists.
So far so good.

After consolidting the files, I can control what data is displayed based
on password. Geography only sees the geography schedule, Sociology only
sees soc, etc. But when I try to do a similar thing with the value lists
for faculty and class names it doesn't work so well. I've tried writing
a script in schedule that opens up classes and runs another script that
copies the right names into a new field. This new field is what is
accessed in schedule. This works great as long as only one dept is using
the system. When a second dept accesses the files, there names and
classes are added to the schedule value lists, which gets confusing.

I know this is probably confusing, but hopefully, there's enough info
here that someone can shed some light on what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks!

 Dynamic Value Lists?

Before you go as far as conditional value lists, could it be as easy as a
different layout and value list for each department? (provided there aren't
200 of them!)  If that won't work, check out Filemaker's web site.  There
are links to tips, tricks and techniques which will give you several
options to do the conditional value lists.
