 Filling in a text box based on value list selection

Hi!

I am not sure what the best way to do this is, so I'd like to ask your help.

In my program there is a part where the user can estimate the length of time
a job will take. The idea is that they can either select a general job size
which will estimate the number of days, or enter a specific number of days
themselves.

There is a pop-up value list containing the words 'small, medium, large'.
Beside it there is a open field for the number of days.

Here is an example of how I would like it to work:

1. The user selects 'small' from the list. This fills the days field with
the number 4.
2. The user then decides to set the number of days on their own. They go
directly to the field and type '7'.

I guess what I am asking is how to have the days field fill in from the
value list item selected in the other field, but not be entirely dependent
on it.

Does this make sense?

Thanks!
Melanie

You can make Days a lookup field, taking its value from a (self-join)
relationship using the general job size field ("GJS") as the match field.
The looked up value would be a calculation ("Lookup"):

Case
(
  GJS= "Small",
       4,

  GJS= "Medium",
       7,

  GJS= "Large",
       10
 )

...or whatever values you want. Define Days to use Relationship::Lookup,
where "Relationship" is the name of a relationship of the file to itself,
using GJS as the match field on both sides. One record with each of the
three values needs to first be created, so that there is something to
lookup. After that, entering a value from the value list in GJS will
auto-enter the corresponding lookedup value, but, because it is a lookup,
the value can be manually overriddden.
