Displaying records from several databases at the same time

Hello,

I have several databases all of which have some common field names (say,
field 1, field 2 and field 3) and a  key field that can be used in defining
a relation but they also have some fields that are specific to themselves. I
have a master database which has a number of records containing the key
fields. I really need to be able to define a relationship that will search
all the subsidiary databases for the key. I can then display the common
fields in my master file.

Does this make sense and more importantly, can I do it?

Many thanks

Stuart

Displaying records from several databases at the same time

I can think of three ways to do this
1. Have a view in the master database that has three Portals, one for each
of
the separate databases. This way would be the easiest but you would see
three lists instead of one master list.

2.  Have the a master list that contains the three common fields and key
for each of the separate databases.  To do this have a script in each of
the separate databases that creates a record in the master whenever a
record is created in the separate databases.  This record in the master
list would contain the common fields and the key field.  This master list
could be searched and you would get one list listing all the records that
match in the three separate databases.  You could set up a script to go to
the appropriate database when you select a record from the master list.
This would require a lot of scripting, but should work.

3.  You could set up scripts that search each separate database and export
the found set into a master list.  This would be a temporary database that
would include the imported found sets from each of the separate databases.
This would merge the three found sets and display them in one list.

I have not tried any of these out, but each one should work.  If anyone
has any thoughts on my suggestions or can think of a better way to do
this I would be interested in hearing.
