 Protect an invoice
Hello,

Our company uses filemaker pro 4.0 to make the invoices. The invoice
gets the products and their prices from a "productdatabase". The
problem is that when a price changes the prices used in the invoice
change aswell! and that is something we don't want. What we want is:
When we have printed an invoice it may not be changed in any way
anymore...........is this possible?

Thanks in advance,

 Protect an invoice

It sounds as tough the invoice is getting the price from a calculation,
rather than a lookup. A calculation computes the price, and will change when
the price changes. A lookup enters the price from a related value, but the
price itself is a number, not a calculation, and does not change unless the
price is "re-lookedup", which occurs only if forced, or when the match field
is changed.

So, change the price to a lookup. If you are unclear how to build a lookup,
let us know and we will walk you through it. If you do so, please give some
detail about the names and data types (text, number, date, etc.) of the
fields involved, and how the files are related.

 Protect an invoice
You need to redesign the database so that the prices are copied from the
products file to the invoice file.  You need to create fields in the invoice
(lineitems) file to physically store the price, the cost, the product
description, and every other priece of information you want to capture.

Unlike most relational design, where you don't want to copy data, an invoice
captures a moment in time and you cannot have it relate to "live current
data" as you have discovered.  Ideally absolutely nothing from the name of
the customer to the tax rate should be related to live data, you want to be
able to print the invoice exactly as it was first printed, no matter what
you change in the db later on.
