 Alpha tab buttons

In an inventory database sorted by item name I would like to be able to
jump to the first item whose name starts with a chosen letter. But I'd
like this to be like a Rolodex, if I go to the first item starting with
'C', then I'd like to be able to step back to the last item starting
with 'B', eg." Barry, Buddy, Carl, Chris".

In FMP4 I can find all the C's but none of the other records are
displayed or are navigable.

In Hypercard it was possible to define buttons named with a letter.
clicking on a button ran a script something like:
        get the name of me
        put me into  a variable
go to the first card whose name starts with the variable

Thanks,
Glen

 Alpha tab buttons

Two new fields:

JumpTo (global, text)
FirstLetter (calculation, text) = Left (ItemName, 1)

Define a relationship SELF between JumpTo (left) and FirstLetter (right).

Define a new value list based upon the values in FirstLetter.  Place JumpTo
on your layout, format it as a Pop-up menu using the new value list and
then remove it from your tab order so the only way to access it is to click
on it.

Create a new script as follows:

Go to Field ["JumpTo"]
Pause/Resume Script ["0:00:00"]     (thanks C. Alex)
Freeze Window
Go to Related Record ["SELF"]
Loop
     If ["Status (CurrentRecordNumber = 1"]
          Exit Script
     End If
     Go to Record/Request/Page [Previous]
Exit Loop If ["JumpTo <> FirstLetter"]
End Loop
Go to Record/Request/Page [Next]

Assign this script to the JumpTo field.
