 Can't close related files

Hello,
There is an odd new behavior that appeared in an app with two
related files. Last evening I worked up some scripts that allow the
user to navigate between these two files. There are other scripts
that do some sorting and setting of yes/no states in fields.
Went to close each file individually; close one, the other is still
open;
close the other, first one still open. Back and forth, infinite loop.
I can close FMP5 but the behavior is disturbing. Checked to see if any
scripts could be stuck in pause; nope.

 Can't close related files

Are there any related fields on the current layouts when you are trying to
close the databases?  They will force FileMaker to re-open the database you
are trying to close.  Try creating a new blank layout in each database and
then close them to see the difference.

 Can't close related files
Nothing is wrong; it's just the nature of the beast. Attach a closing script
to each file--
one that is automatically executed at closing (Edit\Preferences\Document)--
that closes both files.

What's happening is the relationship is opening the related file.
When you go to one file, it automatically opens the closed file because they
are related.

It's not new, FileMaker has always done this when using related
databases. If anything on the current layout requires data from a
closed database, then that database is re-opened (usually in "hidden"
mode - which under Windows means "minimised").

I have noticed that if you're very quick at pressing Apple-W (the Close
keyboard shortcut on the Mac), then you can close a database before the
screen updates, so any related databases are not called upon for data
and therefore not re-opened.

But if you're looking for a permanent solution, then making a closing
script (as said by John) is the best way to go.
