Or have them click on a blank part of the portal, or better yet, put a
button on the portal row that "Deletes Portal Row"

I think you're misunderstanding the process of record creation within
portals. You do NOT have to enter, modify or touch the InventoryNo field
in any way to create a new record. The InventoryNo does not even need to
appear within the portal. All you have to do is click into the last, new
row, and enter other data, like Quantity, Description, or whatever, and
the InventoryNo, if that is the relating field, will be auto-entered BY
FM as the record is created.

If you want it to appear in the portal for informational purposes, you
can make the field unmodifiable to users, and they will still be able to
create new records by typing data into other fields.

If you want to delete a portal row, please ask how to delete a portal row, not
how to edit a portal row. Or perhaps you actually want to do something else which
I don't know as I can't read your mind???
