FIleMaker Server and WebCompanion on one machine
Hello list,

is it possible to run FileMaker Server and WebCmpanion (that requires
a FileMaker client) on a single machine? I think there might be
problems, because both applications try to use the same port for  the
data-sharing feature. But would it be possible with the help of
multihoming? Does anybody know a workaround?

thanx
Sebastian

Running both FileMaker and FileMaker server on the same machine is possible
but it will be much slower than on separate CPU. You can do it, but my
advice is :  you have to maintain FM Server on foreground, using "Keep it
Up". Be aware that this configuration is not recommended, and not very
stable, depending on the size and the number of databases your have.

Multihoming does not matter in this situation because FileMaker client and
FileMaker server use different ports IP, and you can configure the Port IP
of Web Companion. (default port is 591, but if no http server is running on
the same IP, use the "friendly proxy" port 80)

Is it possible - yes.
Is it desirable - no.

With the cost of boxes these days, you should be able to
get one suitable for low intensity web use for less than
FM5 Unlimited cost...

Heya... we've got a similar situation, running unlimited & server on the
same machine as a small handful of the databases we run need to be web
accessible, as well as being accessed via the client software on our
network.

Because the databases are updated regularly, we'd like to only have one
instance of the DB - with two separate machines we'd need two separate
DB's,
which isn't really an option.

Is there no other way around this?  Most of the time speed isn't an
issue,
as there are only perhaps 6 odd people using the DB at any one time
anyway.

---

On a slightly related note, at the moment we're also getting a problem
in
that we cant run a DB in server and in Unlimited at the same time.  You
can
have one, but not the other, any ideas?  Our setup is a Win2K server
box,
SP2.

Any suggestions and thoughts welcomed - trying to get support out of FM
is
like {*filter*} out of a stone! :-)

Thanks

No. This is not true. You would keep the files on Server,
and the Web machine opens them as a Guest - it's the same
file. Anything done to that file would be reflected on
both machines...
