I've written a very simple invoice package that pulls address data into an
invoice which I can print or fax to a client. Some of my clients like to get
invoices by email, how can I do this?

I'm using FM3 on Windows 98 (though if I have a Mac too, so if it is easier
on a mac, that'll be fine).

Note that in preview mode, you can copy the page as a picture, then paste it
into other docs or convert to gif or whatever. On the Mac, there are several
Chooser extensions which allow you to create self-reading applications, such as
Print2PICT.

Can that process be automated? For example, could I create a button on the
invoice form that will email the document (I'll worry about the exact format
later) directly to an address contained in one of the record fields?

Actually, I just reread that and realised it probably can be done, I just
don't know where to start.

E-Mail:

First switch to V4 (or 4.1 which was just released) which has built in
e-mail capablity when FileMaker is used in tandem with Eudora or another
AppleScript aware mailer.  This option will only work if you can
concatonate all of the invice information into a single "Body" field.

Fax:

Faxing should be pretty simple.  Most fax capable modems come with
software which allow the fax to be considered as a printer, either
selected from the chooser, or on the fly by pressing the "opt" key while
selecting "print" from the FILE menu.  This method will fax whatever
document is on the screen, as if it was being sent to the printer.

PDF

One other option you might want to consider is .pdf e-mail attachment.
Creating a .pdf file on a Mac is as simple as selecting a printer.  The
.pdf can then be sent as an e-mail attachment.

This .pdf option works really well for reports with summary fields /
parts.  It also works for any other application on your desktop.  On one
occasion I sequenced a MIDI file for someone via e-mail and sent him back
the sheet music as a .pdf.  The .pdf laser printout was indistinguishable
from the printout directly from the sequencer software.

The Acrobat viewer needed to view and print the file is available free
from the Adobe web site.
