 Printing to PDF From Filemaker

Using FileMaker Pro 4 on MacOS 8 and 8.5 I am trying to run a script which
will print multiple reports to PDF Writer, but Acrobat Exchange launches
at each print, brings itself to the foreground, and stops FM Pro from
processing the next report until Exchange is hidden.  When printing these
reports to pdf manually, we de-select the check box which launches
Exchange and shows the created pdf file, but I can find no way to script
this.

I think it's simply a combination of the limitations of FM Pro coupled
with the limitations of Acrobat Exchange, but there must be some way
around this.  If anyone can do this under Windows, I might be able to try
that.

Any help would be appreciated.

Why not print your report (or whatever) to a postscript file, in a watched
directory from Distiller ?
Distiller stays in the background, and will proces your files. This could then
even be done on another system (Mac or Win/NT).
This has the benefit that you will produce "better" PDF's, and the distilling
is done in background.

Hope this helps...

Strange, I have the exact same setup and do not have this problem. Check all
the preferences in all your Acrobat applications -- there's got to be a way
to turn that off.

I would love to output postscript files, as distiller does indeed produce
better PDFs. (My FMPro layout used to include an EPS file, which looked
horrible when rendered by PDFWriter.) Unfortunately I can't figure out a way
to set LaserWriter 8 to always save a file -- as opposed to printing -- in a
specific folder. Any recommendations?

Thanks,

My scripts involce long sort and export routines before they print.  It is
during the sorts that FMPro hangs.  This may be one difference.

MSW,

Sorry but I'm not completely familiar with the Mac version of Acrobat. On the

I don't know of an equivalent to Distiller Assistant on the Macintosh.
There were some possibilities with the 'virtual' printer driver from Adobe -but
I've never looked into this.
we're using Distiller on a Solaris machine, so the PDF files come automatic in the
correct folders.... (we send it through a Helios Ethershare spooler, which writes
Postscript to disk...)

You should be able to make something work with the "hot" folder mechanism from
Distiller.
