To Tim's suggestion, with which I concur, I would add Scriptology by Matt
Petrowsky and John Mark Osborne. It is slightly more advanced but has a
CD containing hundred of technique files which in my experience have been
invaluable. It would certainly help you come to a better understanding of
what can be done with the text functions which your work will surely
demand. There is a searchable index for the technique files, as well as
detailed databases of functions and script steps. The book itself covers
scripting and calculation basics, validations, value lists, data
operations, relationships, portals, debugging techniques (scripts, calcs
and relationships) and interface issues.
