 combinations of fields
Hi all,

Is it  possible  to count in  anyway the existence of the combination of two
fields.

Field1 is transportnumber
Field2 is customernumber

In  one  transport there can be stuff from several customers. But there
could also be more than one pakage for one customer. Is het possible to
count how many times the combination transportnumber, customernumber exists?
I'd  like to use it in a script putting together a bill.

Thanks
Goofy

you are describing a many-to-many relationship, which in Filemaker is
handled most efficiently through join files.  Trying to do it,
especially in a billing situation, through multi-key fields alone is
going to get you into trouble.

Yes, I'm telling you to restructure your solution. You need a customer
file. You need a shipments file. And you need a third file which
documents the intersection of the two, with multiple records for each
shipment, recording which customers are associated with that shipment.
Or looking at it from the other direction, multiple records for each
customer, associated with each shipment in which the customer
participates.  This join file has at at minimum 2 fields,
transportnumber and customernumber.

This structure will allow you to go to any customer record, and see a
portal with a line for each shipment that customer has had. It will
allow you to go to any shipment record and see a portal with a line for
each customer involved.

It will also allow reporting from the join file with great flexibility
and elegance on customers/shipments/ranges of
dates/amounts/zipcodes/however you want to slice your data, none of
which is possible without major effort using the flat-file structure you
now have.
