Packaging Runtime versions of Filemaker applications

Packaging Runtime versions of Filemaker applications

Hi

I've been using Filemaker since it came out in the 80's, and I have
built many professional products using the program.

In recent media there was some hype about a packaging option that
allowed a particular filemaker database to be locked up and used (like
a runtime version) without the need to have the filemaker software
present.

I have since heard that Claris have been selling this facility with a
'Developer version' of Filemaker for quite a bit more than the
standard package.

I also understand that for quite a bit of extra money Claris will
bestow upon individuals the title of 'Approved Filemaker Developer'

While I am every bit as much a Guru as some of these so called
developers I can not afford the fee to upgrade my software and become
a developer.

I now have a developed application that I would very much like to
'package'

Are there any of you 'developers' are out there who would be willing
to 'package' my application.  I'm sure it would take all of 5 minutes.

Andy:
"Packaging" as you call it is binding with the Runtime engine included
in the FM Developer's edition.  Once bound, end users do not have to
have Filemaker to run the solution.

The facts are this...formerly, the Runtime version was only available to
members of the Claris (now Filemaker) Solutions Alliance. It did and
does cost a bit ($245US per year) to belong to this alliance.

Currently, the FM 4.0 DE is available to the general public, at about
$449 US, I think, with no requirement that one belong to the FSA.  With
this purchase, one is licensed to bind and distribute as many copies of
one's solutions as the market will bear.  I have not read the licensing
agreement, but binding for others who have not purchased it may or may
not be prohibited.

What are the benefits of either purchasing the FM DE yourself or even
going further and joining the FSA?  First of all, you retain complete
control over your solution. You retain all rights to profits, and you
can rebind as many times as needed if you issue corrections or upgrades.
Along with the binding engine, the DE includes valuable development
tools, thirdparty plugins and all sorts of nifty stuff.

Now about the FSA...we "so-called" developers enjoy a bit more than the
bestowing of a title. The listing on the FSA CDs and website have driven
tremendous amounts of business my way, invaluable and cheap advertising.
We have direct access to FM tech support wizards who help out with the
thorniest development problems, and a community network with all those
Partner level and Associate members who can make Filemaker jump through
hoops.  We get beta versions of FM software and final versions for our
own evaluation as part of the membership (though we still have to
purchase the DE separately).

If you find a developer to bind your solution (if that is legal under
the licensing agreement) I assure you it will take far more than 5
minutes to do it correctly, and you will pay for the privilege.  Either
an upfront fee that will equal or exceed the cost of the software, or a
percentage of your sales, and if your solution is that good...that could
end up being a large amount.

If you wish to contact a "developer" in Australia to pursue this, I
suggest you lose the quotation marks and the attitude, and go search one
out on the Filemaker.com website. (there are good reasons not to allow
an American developer to bind your solution).

We'd welcome a new voice in our midst who had something real and
valuable to contribute. New methods and new viewpoints are always
welcome.  Knock the chip off your shoulder and come join us. :)

I don't know about having a chip on my shoulder.

Tongue in cheek would be more accurate.

While what you say is no doubt all true,  the costs in Australia are
not as reasonable as the costs in the USA.

Frankly the price for the developer version is excessive, and the
packager should be included anyway!

Although I have in the past done a lot of development work and will
continue to do so, I am not in the business of selling heaps of
software, I merely use Filemaker to assist me to develop business
solutions and currently I have one that I want to lock up.

What I wanted to do was just package one database (once) and avoid the
need to spend a lot of money in doing so.  I was fishing for someone
to do just this one for a small fee, or in the spirit of help usually
found in these newsgroups.

I also add that when the package was sold initially in Australia pre
release information indicated that the packager software would be
included.  When I purchased Filemaker (I have all versions at full
price) I found that this was not the case.

Thanks for the advice
