 fmp server & fmp unlimited
Can I setup fmp server and fmp unlimited on my database server (win nt -
dual pIII 600 with 512mg ram).  I want server to host the databases for
unlimited.  The unlimited is used to serve web based databased.  I know that
server is disk and ram intensive and uses a lot of the memory but the fmp U
will not do anything but to serve as a bridge between the web connector and
the databases but will that setup work or is there any problem that can be
forseen.

Tx for you help

No. Don't. You already seem to know the right answer, and yet you wish
to choose the wrong one.

Buy a $799 iMac and throw Unlimited on it. Or an HP if you prefer. Don't
cheap out now, you already spent beaucoup bucks on your server, why turn
it into a P233???

No. You cannot run both FM Server and FM Unlimited on the same machine.

FM Unlimited must be on a separate server, and must guest into the
hosted files just like any other FM client. It then serves the files to
the internet.  HTML files live in the web folder of the FM Unlimited
machine.

If you think the "FMU will not do anything but..." you're sadly
mistaken. Every time a request comes into the database from the web,
where do you think that processing is done? Not the server. On the FM
Unlimited machine.

Thank you for your answer.

But I don't understand the server not doing the processing part.  I have
installed the server version and move the file over the the server
directory.  I then open  the fp5 using the host button.  You are telling me
that all the processing is still being done by the fmp client on the fmp
client box (being pro or unlimited) what does Filemaker Pro server do?

Yves,

Filemaker Server does just that: it serves out Filemaker Pro. It does not
process very much data. Filemaker Pro does that on the client machines.
FMS is built for speed-- it does very little very quickly. It has little
depth-- no scripting, little operator control, just some backup and remote
routines, and a bit of logging. It's job is to distribute Filemaker
quickly and evenly, and to not crash (it is stable). If you do not require
downstream network access to Filemaker at the same time as you are serving
out Web Companion via Unlimited, you probably don't need the Server.

But when a client is the host where does the processing take place then? On
the host correct? That doesnt sound right. What then when you are running a
locally hosted file linked to files running on the server?

Jeez this is getitng confusing lol

"When a client is the host" she go slow. I assume you mean peer-to-peer.
The host's gotta cook and clean, as well as provide charming table talk.
Peer to peer provides no real multi-threading, meaning client requests are
dealt with until completed, making any other guests wait patiently. Ok
with small file set and non-intensive multi use, slow with anything bigger.

By "locally hosted file linked to files running on the server" I figure
you mean some kind of opener or utility file, perhaps a place to hold some
local globals. Fine for those purposes, but a file requiring steady use by
the main files should generally be served out.
