How does one web-publish a database containing movies so that users can
view the movie in their browser? Simply creating a database with a
container field for the movie, and then using built-in publishing,
doesn't seem to do it.

Version and platform of FileMaker please.

However, I suspect that Instant Publishing is not going to  serve
your needs. You may need to move to Custom Publishing.

I would also strongly suggest that the QT movies *not* be kept
in the database, but in a subdirectory with a pointer in the
database to the relevant file (again, preferably on a completely
different server) . This will reduce database bloat, and if the
second suggestion is followed, will also keep FileMaker doing what
it does best, which is FileMaker interactions rather than pure
webserving.

Cheers
