Hosting a FileMaker Pro File on Web Server
I'm I hearing/reading correctly that if we publish a FMP5 database to a web
server, in conjunction with FMP Unlimited, that a copy of FMP must also be
running as a maximized or minimized application on that server?

Also, we were planning on hosting on IIS.  Any tips on things to look out
for ... or are we confined to Lasso?

Thanks,

Paul

Yes, the WebCompanion (which comes in the box with FMP)  'is' your
webserver. It'll run together with your copy of FMP Unlimited on your
webserver. You don't need Lasso, what you've got can be enough. Maybe a
CDML-tool can be handy. I use HomePage 3.0 to create CDML/HTML pages.

Succes!

Paulo,

I would recommend using Lasso.  There is a security flaw in FM5 web
companion which allows anyone to have a look at the entire contents of your
database along with field names etc...

If your databases contain information that you don't want to protect in any
way, then that's fine....but if you want to do any kind of
password/authentication then I would highly recommend using Lasso in
conjunction with IIS and that way you can provide another layer of defense
on your database.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific than this but Filemaker have only just
now decided to listen and are now looking at the problem.  I don't want to
let everyone in on the flaw because it's too simple to do that anyone who
reads the documentation could figure it out. They don't have to be
experienced at all.

Good Luck,
Dennis

My Suggestion is stick to IIS and ASP...forget FMPro...its not worth it..I
have extensive experience in FMPro and IIS and believe me..its not worth
time and effort and YES FMPro has to run as a minimized app..I hate when an
App takes  up much needed resources for nothing..
