 Filtering records

I am creating a database for educational purposes. At one point the user
needs to select from a large number of expectations - first by grade, then
by subject, then by subject strand. This will reduce the number of
expectations in the found set to about 8-10 from the original 800. I would
like the found set to be displayed in one list.
In your opinion, what would be the best method to create this? I have looked
at using conditional lists, but I am stuck after the first one. Should I set
up a find layout and perform a find using multiple criteria?

Many thanks

Conditional value list work primarily withFilemaker version 5.01 and up.
What version are you using?

I am using 4.0, but upgrading to 5 is a possibility.
