 Exporting Look and Feel

FM 4 & 5 on Mac

hello,
in my database i have made a special layout for contracts and for faxes
which collects information of several other databases: names of persons,
adresses, things they buy or rent ...
i use this layout for printing my contracts and faxes in Filemaker but i
also want to export each record (for example in Word Format) - as it is and
at the moment of printing - to have a document on its own that i can archive
and trace in separate folders (one with contracts and one with faxes). it
seems that i can only export the data of the separate fields but i want that
my separate documents have the same layout and information as in Filemaker,
is there anyone who can help me, thanks, lea

I would use the PDF-Printer-Driver of Adobe's Acrobat to generate a
printlike file. You may generate a Script to change to the PDF-driver
and back.

Go with PDFs
Use Adboe Acrobat to create PDFs to archive records or reports.
The text can also be modified in the future if necessary.

PDFs are created from the postscript file, so you are printing your document
to a digital format instead of paper format.
They can also be read on Mac, Unix, or PC
provided the person has Acrobat Reader which can be obtained for free.

I think there have been a few other programs other than Adobe Acrobat
mentioned in this newsgroup that create PDFs.

I use Adobe Acrobat 3 (for Windows) and upgraded to 4, but had too many
problems with it, so I went back to 3.
It's around $200
I've been using it for almost two years to distribute a 1100 page catalog on
CD and over an inhouse network from a customized fmp 3 database that we only
own two licenses for and need to distribute the information and pictures
from.
There are times when I have had problems editing text, but in general, PDFs
have served me very well.

I think the only way to do it using word would be to recreate the layout and
then do a mailmerge.

Hope this helps.
Good luck.
Nina

 Exporting Look and Feel
Hi lea -

In addition to the previous suggestions, especially if you can't afford or don't
want to use Acrobat, you can create Word documents that look just like your FMPro
reports by going to Preview Mode, choosing Copy, opening a new Word doc, and
choosing Paste.  The documents are not editable, but you may not need them to be.
The entire process can be scripted using a combination of ScriptMaker and
Applescript.  Several in the group like this method and have been doing it
successfully for some time.

Hope this suggestion is helpful.

Best of Luck -
James

Don't forget to remove the obvious spam blocks when replying.
I advocate making an address book entry and using it!  Thanks!
